The story behind Freedom by Design.

And what I’m hoping it becomes for you.

Hi, I’m Thomas.

I studied economics at UC Irvine — which is where I first bumped into the two ideas that quietly rearranged my whole life: opportunity cost and compound interest. Once they really clicked, money stopped looking like a number on a screen. It started looking like time. Like choices. Like freedom.

For 14 years after that, I worked in corporate finance at places like Farmers Insurance and Capital Group — mostly helping senior leaders turn complicated financial questions into clear, calm decisions. I got to build things from scratch, partner closely with people I genuinely admired, and see firsthand how much financial clarity quietly improves everything else about a team, a month, a whole year.

In my late 30s, those same two ideas gave me real freedom. More time with family. A swing at entrepreneurship. The ability to say yes to the things that match my values. That kind of freedom is something I want for everyone.

The gap.

Ask most people how important understanding personal finance is to their life, on a scale of 1 to 10. Most say 9 or 10. Ask what their school taught them about it. Most say 0 or 1 or 2.

That gap is the whole reason this exists.

For the first time, AI makes it possible to bring thoughtful, one-on-one-feeling guidance to anyone — a kitchen-table version of the work I used to do in glass-walled offices. That’s the opening I want to walk through.

What I’m hoping.

This is my small contribution. A little gift, done to the best of my ability, for anyone who was never handed the playbook. I’m just trying to share — in the simplest, kindest, most honest way I know how — what took me years to figure out on my own.

Some of what I’m hoping out loud:

That’s the dream.

The honest bit.

I don’t hold any financial licenses, and nothing here is personalized advice. I’m just the friend who built the spreadsheets for a living, doing my small part to pass along what I wish someone had told me early on. If any of it helps even a little — that’ll make this worthwhile.

Early trial.

I’m piloting this with a small, curious group before opening it up. If anything here resonates — or doesn’t quite land — I’d love to hear from you.
